Breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Shrewsbury Bay to the west are the essence of the Monmouth Beach House, which sits on a rare double lot with both ocean and bay frontage. Spaces are painted with sunlight from dawn to dusk, and east to west, while minimizing visibility of adjacent properties to maintain purity of the atmosphere. Careful study led to a creative solution allowing the second floor to be raised above the seawall within the maximum height code limitations.

The oceanfront location—prone to tropical storms and hurricanes—presents unique building challenges from flooding to high winds, harsh light and salt air. Through the Design Poetics process, the structure’s performance was designed to mitigate these conditions without sacrificing the feeling of the spaces. The ground floor celebrates the joy of summer on the Shore with friends and family through rest, relaxation, and socializing in the indoor/outdoor pool and entertainment spaces on the protected bayside. A separate entrance beyond the three-car garage allows guests direct entry to this hidden world. Here a large lounge and bar opens seamlessly to the pool deck leading to a large covered cabana with fireplace, enclosed shower and changing area, outdoor grill and landscaped yard that extends to the water.

The heart of the house frames spectacular views on the second floor. Stone, wood, natural fabrics and light define the spaces where the simple pleasure of a morning coffee can be enjoyed on the east or west balconies, where one can indulge in the changing light and shifting sounds of each season. At the center of the open plan is the kitchen, where the joy of cooking and serving fills the space. This opens up to a large combined living and dining room. Two guest bedrooms and a dramatic bayside terrace round out the floor. A private second floor provides a large master suite and office studio. Nestled into these main spaces are a large bath with dramatic views, a cozy screening room, a private outdoor hot tub space with shower, two large walk-in closets, his and hers powder rooms, and direct roof access where panoramic views and star gazing at night can be enjoyed.
